With the passing of each minute, it seems, life becomes busier and busier. So much so, that I am sure that I don’t really need to paint that picture for you. We see it in the filling up of our schedules, feel it in the lack of quality sleep that we receive, and hear it in the voices of our loved ones who remind us how long it has been since we did X, Y, and Z. Everywhere that we look, that busyness is all around us, attempting to suffocate us at every turn.

What do we do when we feel like we need time, rest and relaxation, when we feel like we need a moment to breathe? Oftentimes we do the opposite, pushing ourselves practically to the limit, assuring ourselves that the sooner that we finish the task at hand, the sooner we will experience some much needed R & R. Yet, more often than not we finish one task only to launch right into the next one, effectively pushing that R & R further off into the distance.

Now, we could take the time to ask ourselves why we do this? And what could we do to make it better? And those are certainly valid questions, with which we should probably spend some quality time in the near future. Sometimes, however, we just need to get away, period, whether that means putting our phone on “Do Not Disturb” for a few hours, physically going out of town for a restful weekend, or closing our houses up and taking off on a month-long adventure to who-knows-where. When it’s time, it’s time. And there really is no point in putting it off when it is sorely needed.

Just like our bodies require a certain amount of sleep each day in order to rejuvenate and heal themselves, our sanity and peace of mind require a certain amount of “away-time” in order to keep everything in balance. And, yes, there will always be a number of reasons why you “just can’t get away right now,” which is wholly understandable. We are all busy. We all have responsibilities and demands on our time.

But, what it boils down to is this: Are we worth what it takes to take care of ourselves properly – the sacrifices that doing so requires, the adjustments that we will need to make, and the uncertainty that will linger on the horizon. That question, my dears, is one that we all must answer for ourselves. And if the answer is “yes,” then we owe it to ourselves to “get away” when needed, and simply let the reasons why we “can’t” sort themselves out later. #sanguinemango
