I must admit that this pandemic has me really concerned. Not so much because of the virus itself, though that is definitely a concern of mine, but more so because of the wide range of reactions that so many people appear to be having in regards to the pandemic. Considering the fact that there is so much that society as a whole does not know about COVID-19 – the myriad of ways in which a person can contract the virus, the numerous effects that the virus can have on a person’s body, the length of time that the virus will be among us, and how extensively the virus will affect our economies, communities, and everything else that is associated with what we have come to know and perceive as our “way of life.” Quite possibly, the issue that is often at the forefront of our minds is how we can remain safe when facing so many unknowns.
I have noticed that a lot of people have different opinions regarding how we should protect ourselves during this pandemic. Some people think that wearing masks is the way to go, whereas others think that wearing masks is not helpful. Yet others may not necessarily have an opinion on the effectiveness of wearing masks, but for their own personal reasons they choose not to wear them. For some people, disinfecting everything and everyone as much as humanly possible is the key. Whereas, others seem to believe that remaining solitary is the safest option. And this particular issue does not appear to be any easier for governments, restauranteurs, grocery and retail store owners and operators to agree upon and resolve either.
There really are so many things that we can do, stances that we can adopt, and perceptions that we can hold. Yet, one of the equalizing aspects of this pandemic-era is that each of us has to make the necessary decisions for ourselves and our loved ones based on what we know, believe to be the case, and the feasibilities of executing those decisions. This is a lot to have on our shoulders. A lot to have to mull through minute after minute, day after day. And this constant contemplation can weigh us down and make us weary before our time.
Figuring out how to navigate this tough season is hard enough in and of itself without adding disruptive elements such as violence, unnecessary difficulties and disagreements, and chaos. Safety must overshadow that easy lean into taking offense. I realize that each person’s opinion matters and is important, that each person has the right to voice their concerns and determine what they believe is the best for them. Something that I agree with wholeheartedly. However, each of us is not alone in this world. This is a world of many lives, all of whom want their opinions to be heard and respected, which is always important. Yet, if safety is not practiced and certain accommodations are not made, which at times may include adhering to certain requirements that are put in place by agencies and establishments, such as requiring the wearing of masks during this pandemic-era in order to protect as many lives as possible, these precious lives might no longer be here, causing their opinions and beliefs to be eternally silenced.
So, as we maneuver from minute to minute in this occasionally baffling season, may we extend compassion to others as we consider and lookout for the safety and protection of all so that we can enter together into a bright future. Be blessed. #sanguinemango
