We live in a time and world where it seems like everything is moving at the speed of light. Cars are attaining greater speeds than before, and they are pushed to the edge of the speed barrier on an every-minute basis. The pace of most work environments has likely tripled within the last five to ten years alone. And even our bodies feel like they’re rushing toward their own speedy maturation.

Everything is moving fast and unfortunately there isn’t a lot that we as individuals can do about that. I know, I know, that’s not great news. But stick with me, please, because there is something that we can adjust. What is it? I’m so glad that you asked.

Communication. That’s right. The beautiful art of self expression, specifically through words. Yes, we most certainly also communicate via other methods, but today we’re just focusing our attention on communication via words.

I mean, think about it. How often do you receive well-written text messages, clear and easy to understand voicemail messages, and even straightforward sermons? For many of us, it has been quite a while since we experienced those things and we’re more than likely not going to experience a change in that trend any time soon.

Why is that? There are a plethora of answers, many of which can change in any given moment. Yet, the consensus is that people are becoming increasingly busy by the moment as they try to keep up with societal, economical, and occupational demands. And in an effort to keep up, many people have chosen, whether knowingly or unknowingly, to sacrifice communicating well, relegating themselves and their communication to an unsatisfactory state.

What can we really do about it? Well, there are a lot of underlying issues present there that require in-depth attention and consideration that goes beyond this one article. However, there is something that we all can do while we effectively work toward proper solutions for those underlying issues. We can slow down a little bit, purposefully take time to think and commit ourselves to communicating in a fuller, more efficient way, and take some extra care when crafting what we will say. After all, there is more than just the quality of our self expression on the line. Our relationships, livelihood, and even our effectiveness as witnesses for Christ are all on the line when we communicate. So, when we release our words into the great beyond we must do so responsibly, because reckless communication is a dangerous bomb with explosive results that tend to show up when least expected and in a manner that is significantly less than favorable.

You might be saying to yourself “But I don’t really know how to get my point across well,” or “I’m not good at writing.” And you’re not alone. Many people feel that way. And though I’m a strong believer that everyone can do just about anything to some degree, I recognize that everyone is blessed with natural gifts that allow them to excel in certain areas. This is a part of what makes us all unique.
