Yes, it is. Did I say yes? Just in case I didn’t say it, yes, proofreading is really important. And not just for research papers and speeches.

In this day and age, where the default expectation seems to be for everyone to move faster than possible and do more than possible, all while being perfect, which let’s face it, is never possible, something is bound to fall between the cracks. Whether it’s our relationships, job duties, household responsibilities, philanthropic endeavors, or any other pertinent area of our lives, this move-faster-than-humanly-possible mentality will inevitably result in something or someone being lost, left behind, or overlooked.

And no matter how small proofreading might seem to be in the grand scheme of things, it’s often one of the essential things that is overlooked. Now, you might be thinking “But proofreading isn’t life-altering. It’s not equal in importance to relationships, jobs, or other major aspects of our lives.” And I see your point. But I would like to counter with my own point, if I may. Proofreading is connected to all of those things and it affects all of those things, whether directly or indirectly.

You see, proofreading – the reviewing of text contained in works such as manuscripts, speeches, articles, magazines, business documents, marketing materials, and more to ensure that the text is accurate and conveys the desired information, while noting any errors or discrepancies – helps us to ensure that our communication with others is as clear and precise as possible.

We’ve all been in those situations where we’ve received a rogue text message from someone whom we know, a text message that left us wondering “What in the world were they trying to say?” Because, clearly, they weren’t saying that they wanted to “go to Dairy Queen® and get a lizard because they’re on sale for $500.00″ or that they needed some “screamer” for their coffee because “pimento used it all up without repurposing it.”

So, whether we are drafting a text message, a letter to our favorite aunt, a message for our boss, or a fifty-page dissertation, we need to take the time to review what we plan to put out into this world. Sometimes that might require a few quick minutes of our time and other times it might require days- or weeks-worth of focus. And I get it, sometimes there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the world to exist, let alone proofread anything. But that reality doesn’t absolve us from the responsibility to communicate well.

There is some good news though. We were never meant to do everything ourselves. We human beings have the ability to rely on others. Our strengths are meant to benefit others, just as their strengths are meant to benefit us. And our weaknesses are oftentimes just disguised beacons directing someone else’s strengths in those areas to us, and vice versa.

We at Sanguine Mango recognize that time is of the essence for so many of us and time is a commodity that we can’t manufacture, no matter how hard we try. And we also realize that concerns about time don’t negate the fact that we all desire to be seen and heard in the most accurate way possible. With this in mind, we at Sanguine Mango take our strengths in the area of proofreading and connect them with our clients’ unique opportunities, bettering their communication and their lives. And we would love to do the same for you.
